Magnificent Frigatebird: Facts, Photos & Why It’s So Strange

Fregata magnificens

A pirate with a big red balloon

The male inflates a scarlet throat pouch the size of a football to impress the ladies. Both sexes make a living by mugging other seabirds in mid-air. And despite spending its whole life over the ocean, the frigatebird can’t get wet. A magnificent contradiction.

Why is this animal unusual?

It has the largest wings, compared to its body weight, of any bird. Its whole skeleton weighs less than its feathers. That lets it stay in the air for weeks without landing.

Why does it look like that?

Black, with long narrow wings and a deeply forked tail. The male’s red throat pouch takes about 20 minutes to inflate fully.

Strangest biological feature

It can sleep while flying, resting one half of its brain at a time.

Why is it strange?

Its feathers aren’t waterproof. If a frigatebird lands on the sea, it gets waterlogged and may drown. So it snatches fish from the surface without ever touching down.

Interesting behavioral facts

It chases other seabirds and harasses them until they throw up their catch – then grabs the meal before it hits the water.

Records held

The chick depends on its mother for more than a year – among the longest childhoods of any bird.

Magnificent Frigatebird: quick answers

Why does the frigatebird have a red pouch?

Only males have it. They inflate the bright red throat pouch like a balloon to attract females during the breeding season.

Can frigatebirds swim?

No. Their feathers aren’t waterproof, so they avoid landing on water. They snatch food from the surface while flying.

How long can a frigatebird stay in the air?

For weeks. It has the largest wings for its body weight of any bird and rides air currents with almost no effort.

Where do magnificent frigatebirds live?

Along tropical coasts of the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, including the Caribbean and Galápagos.
