Shoebill: The Bird That Looks Like a Dinosaur

Balaeniceps rex

The bird that stares into your soul

Five feet tall, a beak shaped like a wooden clog and a stare that could stop a crocodile. The shoebill stands in African swamps as still as a statue – and then strikes so violently that it takes the whole plant along with the fish. It looks prehistoric because, frankly, it acts prehistoric.

Why is this animal unusual?

It hunts by doing nothing. A shoebill can stand frozen for hours, watching the water. When a fish surfaces, the whole bird collapses forward onto it, beak first, in one explosive lunge.

Why does it look like that?

The beak is about 20 cm long, nearly as wide, and ends in a sharp hook. Its edges are sharp enough to slice a fish’s head off – which is exactly what it does before swallowing.

Strangest biological feature

That shoe-shaped bill. It’s also a bucket: parents scoop up water in it and pour it over their eggs to keep them cool.

Why is it strange?

Despite the name, it isn’t really a stork – its closest relatives are pelicans. It greets its partner by clattering its beak, a noise people compare to a machine gun.

Interesting behavioral facts

Shoebill parents usually raise only one chick. The stronger sibling bullies the weaker one, and the parents let it happen – the second chick is basically a spare.

Records held

One of the slowest wingbeats of any bird: only about 150 flaps a minute.
