Megamouth Shark: Facts, Photos & Why It’s So Strange

Megachasma pelagios

The giant shark nobody knew existed until 1976

A shark longer than a car, with a mouth over a metre wide – and science had no idea it was out there until one got tangled in a US Navy anchor in 1976. Since then, fewer than 300 megamouth sharks have ever been seen. It’s one of the rarest big animals on the planet.

Why is this animal unusual?

Like the whale shark and the basking shark, it’s a gentle giant that filters tiny animals from the water. It swims slowly with its vast mouth open and swallows whatever drifts in.

Why does it look like that?

A huge rounded head, rubbery lips, a soft flabby body and rows of tiny hooked teeth it doesn’t really need.

Strangest biological feature

The mouth – about 4 ft 3 in (1.3 metres) across.

Why is it strange?

It follows its food up and down. By day it stays in deeper water, and at night it rises to within a few metres of the surface, tracking the daily movement of krill.

Interesting behavioral facts

Almost everything else about its life is unknown. A pregnant female was examined for the first time only in 2023.

Records held

Its discovery in 1976 is considered one of the greatest shark finds of the 20th century.

Megamouth Shark: quick answers

Is the megamouth shark dangerous?

No. Despite its huge mouth, it’s a slow filter feeder that swallows krill and jellyfish. Its teeth are tiny.

How rare is the megamouth shark?

Fewer than 300 have ever been recorded, mostly animals caught in fishing nets or washed ashore. Nobody knows how many there really are.

How does a megamouth have babies?

It gives birth to live young. This was confirmed in 2023, when a pregnant female carrying seven pups washed ashore in the Philippines.

Can you see a megamouth shark in an aquarium?

No live megamouth has ever been kept. A few preserved specimens are on display in museums, mostly in Japan.
